A veterinarian with USDA accreditation is one who has completed the required training from the National Veterinary Accreditation Program (NVAP) in the state(s) in which they are licensed to practice veterinary medicine. A USDA accredited veterinarian is qualified to vouch and sign for the medical condition of someone’s pet or another animal. Not every veterinarian has this accreditation. Locating USDA Accredited Veterinarian

Finding a USDA accredited veterinarian may be done multiple ways. You can check with one or more local veterinarians to see if they or another veterinarian they know has accreditation.

You can also use the NVAP accredited veterinarian search tool USDA APHIS | Locate an Accredited Veterinarian to find accredited vets in your area. Be aware however that the search results may not list all accredited veterinarians in your area since some accredited veterinarians do not allow the USDA APHIS to reveal their information to the public.

You can also find a list of USDA accredited veterinarians at https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/nvap/ct_areavet with a search by the veterinarian’s name and accreditation number.

It is very important to make sure the veterinarian you will visit has USDA accreditation for the state in which you are seeing them. If they don’t, the USDA APHIS will not endorse your veterinarian health certificate. To confirm the accreditation status of your vet, contact the NVAP Coordinator in your state, or search any state for the veterinarian’s name in question and/or their state license number. Most states have an online database of licensed practices that you can search.
