Are you planning to move your pet(s) or other animal(s) from one state to another, or to another country? If so, you will probably need to get a certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI). These CVIs are often required for animals to participate in various type of events, such as sales, rides, and shows. The requirement for a CVI helps ensure the animals being relocated are do not transport parasites or illnesses they may be carrying that could cause harm to humans and/or animals in the destination area or at the site of the event. You can get a pet health certificate online or directly from a qualified veterinarian.
Possible Requirements Before Getting a CVI
Beyond the need to fulfill certain health criteria, depending on the age, species, origin, destination, and reason for travel, animals being transported may have to undergo certain tests, vaccinations, treatments, or other medical procedures before they qualify to be included on a CVI. The requirements of the destination area or venue may make these requirements anywhere from simple to complex.
Flying with Pets
Virtually all commercial airlines require a dog health certificate for travel in addition to health certificates for other types of pets. The timeframe in which you need to obtain a certificate of health for your pet will vary between airlines.
Driving from State to State with Pets
If you are driving your own vehicle on a road trip to another state, you may need a health certificate for each pet you take with you. The requirements for this do vary among the states. In many cases a valid health certificate will be necessary to cross state lines with a pet. An example of an exception is in California, to enter that state you only need proof of a current rabies vaccination. The penalty for not having a current health certificate when required can be in the hundreds of dollars.
